Water Glistens
Publisher Desc.
Water Glistens, As The River Flows is a work for String Orchestra
composed during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. COVID 19, a novel virus, has gripped the
world with unprecedented force affecting millions medically, financially, and
emotionally. Underlying the trauma and
tragedy is a sense of optimism that the pandemic will pass. It may just be
the human spirit that bolsters the optimism, the antithesis to the crisis,
but as we look to nature, we see the ebb and flow of cycles. Seasons change, weather patterns change,
living things die and new growth appears.
Perhaps that is what gives us hope.
Water Glistens moves in compound time, imitating the gentle flow of
water in streams along trails I walked near my home. I walked often during the pandemic shut
down, allowing nature to provide solace during an anxious, uncertain time.
The calm conclusion includes the call of a bird played by the first violin,
indicating all will be well. Man will
beat the virus, triumph, and hopefully, make the world a better place. Students will enjoy learning the contrast
and similarity of triplet rhythms in compound and simple meters. This piece may be performed alone or as
part of a trilogy, including Life Endures and Nature Restores, other works
found in my catalog, composed during the pandemic.
