The Heavenly Lake is situated in Tianshan Mountain range in Xinjiang Province in China. Myths surround this lake about a beautiful goddess who bathed there. Legend says she overcame a nuisance demon by stabbing it with a hairpin that then transformed into a beautiful elm tree on the lake shore. This arrangement for recorder ensemble with piano, harp, percussion, and strings features pentatonic melodies, lush harmonies, and intricately woven textures to make this playable work both engaging to rehearse and listen to.
