Mastery
Publisher Desc.
This brisk and energetic song by Andrew Bowman tells of the struggle over control of oneself from greater powers. From the opening line, I would not have a god come in to shield me suddenly from sin..., the choir is thrusted into a vigorous declaration that is echoed by the sixteenth note rhythms in the accompaniment. A quick shift to and from compound meter, along with great dynamic contrast, provides the singers and audience with emotional diversity. "Mastery" is the second poem in a series of seven from Sara Teasdale's "Interlude: Songs Out of Sorrow."
