These Three Songs were composed in New York City in 1986, originally for baritone voice. They have since been arranged for soprano, mezzo, and tenor.
The set includes The Garden of Love (Blake); Jenny Kiss’d Me (Hunt); and Music, When Soft Voices Die (Shelley). Music, When Soft Voices Die was a Finalist in the 1995 G. Schirmer Song Competition. The judges for that competition included John Harbison and Dawn Upshaw.
Premiered 7 November 1987 by Peter McGlaughlin, baritone, and Deborah Jamini, piano, in a concert of Beck’s music he produced at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City, the recording here of Three Songs features Jeffrey Brich, tenor, and Korey Barrett, piano. This recording is included on Beck’s 2020 CD, by moonlight (innova 1051).
