Start to DJ Level 1

Ideal for students in middle and high school, this mixed-media course includes professionally led technique videos by DJ Hapa, workbooks to keep students on track, exploration of music fundamentals, and training in how to use DJ equipment effectively. Culminating in a student-created six-song mix, the eight sequential lessons teach students how to use DJ equipment and controls; map song elements to get the desired mix; add filters, color, and beat FX; create loops; and minimize distortion in the equalizer. Students download a set of music provided to learn and use the DJ equipment effectively, but you can expand to other music if you wish. 

 

Purple workbooks will guide students using iPads, iOS phones, Android tablets or phones, or Chromebooks with touchscreens using the free DJay App. Green workbooks are for use with Windows or Mac laptops and desktop computers using the free Serato DJ Lite software.

 

On-site coaches set the scene for success by facilitating the equipment and software access, pacing the lesson with the video content, and helping students find success. Coaches are certified through the self-guided ten-hour training course for Level 1. Coaches need only to stay a step or two ahead of the students in the lessons – they do not need to be trained musicians! Support from the Campus Coach Community comes with your training for everything from equipment setup to technique and teaching tips, making this training doable for any music enthusiast!
