Schubert was a precocious 16-year-old when he composed these pieces for unaccompanied male voices at the Imperial Seminary in Vienna. This arrangement will challenge your high-school trombone players, especially with regard to the range of the Trombone 1 part (Ab above the staff), and the transition to the key of Concert D in the final movement. However, the music is glorious, and 21st Century students will enjoy the challenge of the technical demands of the score. Alternate low-brass parts (Horns doubling Trombones 1 and 2, Baritone T.C. and Tuba doubling Trombone 3) are provided for flexibility in the make-up of the performing ensemble.
