Tom Cipullo continues to add to the canon of modern art songs. The works in this volume for mezzo-soprano and piano were all composed between 1999 and 2006. Glances is a setting of six brief, enigmatic poems - one of which is set twice - by Polish historian and writer Agata Tuszynska. Marilyn Kallet's musical poetry is the inspiration for How to Get Heat Without Fire, a set of four songs. Over the years, The Pocketbook has proven the most popular of the songs and is often excerpted from the cycle. Linda Pastan's poem was used in the solo song Ask the Moon, which was composed as a gift. A White Rose sets a text by John Boyle O'Reilly and uses Alban Berg's Sieben Fruhe Lieder as an inspiration. This was specifically composed as a response to Berg's Liebesrode with its "dreams of ecstasy." Each of the sets and standalone songs is also available separately via ePrint.
