The Sonata for Viola and Piano, Op. 10, was commissioned by the Kentucky Music Teachers Association in 2010 and was premiered at their state convention in October of that year with Jeremy Mulholland as soloist and the composer at the piano. The composer has stated, I chose to write this work for Viola because I think it is unfairly maligned and is in fact, as Berlioz stated, a noble instrument. I love the sound of it, and my violist friends have always lamented the lack of literature for their instrument. My hope is that the sonata will find its way into the repertoire. The work is in the standard 3-movement format (F-S-F) with the first in sonata form in C and much use of Phrygian inflections. The second is a lyrical ABA in E minor with the outer sections focusing on the dark, rich lower register, and the middle section featuring a lilting, folk-like melody. The last is essentially monothematic in C with a driving 6/8 pulse and is marked Vivace.
