Rachmaninoff composed his "Vocalise" in 1915 as the last of his
14 Songs or 14 Romances, Op. 34. Originally it was composed for high voice
(soprano or tenor) with piano accompaniment and dedicated to soprano Antonina
Nezhdanova.
Rachmaninoff orchestrated it for violin and orchestra and it is this
version that this arrangement for cello and string orchestra is based.
