The Maple Leaf Rag is one of the most popular compositions from the musical style of Ragtime which was the predominant musical style in America in the early Twentieth Century. It was written in 1899 by Scott Joplin who was dubbed the King of Ragtime. He wrote over 40 Ragtime pieces for piano, ballets, and operas. Joplin considered his ragtime piano pieces as classical music rather than honky tonk music played in clubs. This arrangement has the xylophone player as a soloist accompanied by three marimbas.
