This famous piece is from the incidental music Grieg wrote for the play Peer Gynt in 1875 by Henrik Ibsen. Grieg extracted this piece to be the final movement of Peer Gynt Suite #1. The piece is an example of program music. In the play, Peer Gynt dreams he sneaks into the Mountain King hall filled with his goblins. He is found out and the goblins threaten to punish him but he breaks free and escapes. The beginning can be heard as Peer tiptoeing along. The music gets faster and more aggressive as he is found out and fights with the goblins. There are strikes and clashes in the music indicating perhaps a fight. The final long roll could be Peer Gynt as he is kicked out of the hall and rolls down the hill to safety by the fearsome king and his goblins.
