Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was one of the most prolific composers of the Classical era.aIl Maestro e lo Scolare, a two-movement work for piano duet, was composed in about 1778, and is well-known among piano teachers as an excellent pedagogical work. This transcription makes the first movement of this work available as a duo for either two clarinets or two bass clarinets. The movement is in theme-and-variations form. As the title suggests, the 'maestro', or teacher, plays each phrase first, with the 'scolare', or student, then imitating. Therefore, the two players enjoy absolutely equal challenges. Each variation provides a bit more than the last in the way of technical challenge. Haydn's original score included very little in the way of dynamic or articulation markings, so suggestions appropriate to the style of the period have been added in this transcription. We are confident this work makes an excellent addition to the repertoire for intermediate-level students on either clarinet or bass clarinet.
