The people are proud, hardworking, family oriented and have a zest for life. Cast in an ABA form, Heartland Zeal pays homage to these fine Midwestern qualities. Included are four main musical ideas; the first being rhythmic and the others melodic. A minimalistic style begins and ends the piece with multiple layers of boisterous, setting and ever-changing rhythms. The main themes soon follow and reflect the spirit, enthusiasm and tenderness of the region and the people. Heartland Zeal was commissioned by the Indiana Bandmasters Association for the 2014 All-District Honor Bands.
