Florete Flores (iSend forth flowers as the lilyi) is Nicholas
Whiteis musical setting of Ecclesiasticus 39:19-21. "Florete
Flores" quotes the traditional Gregorian plainsong melody at the opening
of the piece, in a dialogue between the two soprano parts, and uses an
ostinato figure in the underneath parts to support the meandering
melody.
Quickly conjuring a sense of mystery, this short motet proceeds with
challenging melodic material for the upper voices, supported by hauntingly
repetitive harmonies from the altos, tenors and basses. An effective
communion motet for any occasion.
