Fire and Ice are two of the most diverse forces known to man. Since early times, fire has been associated with an untamed force, which, at times, assumes a life of its own. Forest fires in the Western United States best exemplify this. Ice, on the other hand, has been associated with a calm and steady movement. Glaciers are the best examples of this. Many have drawn comparisons and contrasts between these two forces. Perhaps the most well-known is Robert Frost's 1920 poem "Fire and Ice."
This composition experiments with these two contrasting forces and attempts to illustrate them musically. It was written in 1994 for the Crestwood Middle School band and revised in 2023.
Fire and Ice include vocal effects spoken by the band members and special effects performed by the band members. Band members will need Plastic/Cellophane Bags. If possible, look for the older "crinkly" style bags or Tyvek house wrap. When slowly and lightly crinkled, this should give the sound of fire beginning to start. Use more speed as the fire builds.
