The tale of the shepherd boy, David, leading his people in victory over
the Philistine army is brought to life in this grade 2 work. The opening
section, in time, represents the young hero, as he is preparing to go into
battle. At measure 39, the Philistine army enters with an accented line in
the cello and bass part. The violins and violas follow with the theme of the
Israelite soldiers. The battle begins at 51, with the sixteenth note figures
of the upper strings and the entrance of Goliath in the cellos and basses.
Finally, at measure 65 our hero enters, winding up his sling shot and
delivering the fatal blow to Goliath - defeating the Philistines - signaling
the triumphant conclusion.
With strong melodic lines and energetic rhythmic figures, this piece is
sure to be a hit with your young orchestra.
