The Suite for Variety Orchestra is a suite in eight movements by Dmitri Shostakovich. The work consists of a collection of movements which derive from other works by the composer. It is also named Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra. For many years the Suite for Variety Orchestra was misidentified as the lost Suite for Jazz Orchestra No. 2 (1938), a different work in three movements that was lost during World War II. Dance 1 (in A major and ternary form, middle section in F major). Instrumentation: PICCOLO, FLUTE, OBOE, CLARINET 1 IN Bb, CLARINET 2 IN Bb, ALTO SAXOPHONE 1 IN Eb, ALTO SAXOPHONE 2 IN Eb, TENOR SAXOPHONE 1 IN Bb, TENOR SAXOPHONE 2 IN Bb, BASSOON, HORN 1 IN F, HORN 2 IN F, HORN 3 IN F, TRUMPET 1 IN Bb, TRUMPET 2 IN Bb, TRUMPET 3 IN Bb, TROMBONE 1, TROMBONE 2, BASS TROMBONE, TUBA, TIMPANI, PERCUSSION (2 players), (Tamburino, Snare Drum), GUITAR, ACCORDION, PIANO 1, PIANO 2 (Optional Keyboard), VIOLIN 1, VIOLIN 2, VIOLA, VIOLONCELLO, DOUBLE BASS. The work was recorded by Riccardo Chailly conducting the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1991 (also erroneously identified as the Jazz Suite No. 2), and released on a disc entitled Shostakovich: The Jazz Album.
