It was John Hammond who suggested to Mary Lou Williams that she compose some music for Benny Goodman. In 1937 Benny Goodman had a radio show that was sponsored by Camel Cigarettes so Mary Lou wrote this arrangement of Camel Hop for him to use as a theme song. The arrangement was recorded several times on the radio and in live performances in 1937. At present, most of the original parts are assumed lost - they are not to be found in the libraries of Mary Lou Williams or Benny Goodman. This arrangement has been reconstructed from the original parts along with a transcribed score.
