Ravel's Bolero has been a favorite since childhood since I first heard it accompanying the iconic Olympic ice dance routine of Torvill Dean. Since an arrangement of Ravel for wind band ruins the orchestration (and the main point of the piece), I decided to write my own version in a similar vein designed for winds and not strings. The influence of Ravel is obvious in Bolero for Band, but the differences are many. While both reference the Spanish dance genre, this Bolero is in 4/4 time rather than 3/4, features only one scale (C Phrygian), shows off the instrument colors of a symphonic band, and is quite a bit shorter. Can you identify the different instruments as they play the theme? (Grade 4)
