Rhapsody in B-flat minor
Starting with a small and simple idea, this virtuosic work evolves into an intense toccata using a fiery malleted line with flying arpeggiated chimes. Changing time signatures and asymmetrical meter create infectious rhythmic excitement, followed by an abrupt shift of character using chimes layered over singing bells to set up an intimate, flowing section. The calm is interrupted by the return of the bass ostinato which pervades the entire range of handbells to the end. Exciting!
