Requiem Sinfonica - Dies Irae
Publisher Desc.
The Dies Irae or Day of Wrath is a movement I wasn't keen on writing but I felt that it represented the anguish and confusion of the souls who perished. What would have been their final thoughts? Even after the fire, what are their thoughts as they pass from this existence to the next? That's what this movement represents, their anger, their sadness, and the acceptance. It's about sorting through their feelings and learning to accept what happened.
Musically, it features two central themes - first the Dies Irae Gregorian chant and a perverse version of a Russian hymn called Salvation is Created. I did this to ask the question of why?' And "what's next?"
The loud rhythm driven sections are marked by screeching woodwinds, articulated brass and percussion statements of the dies irae notation, and string slides, note bends, and harmonics to represent the anger. The quieter, yet sinister moments represent confusion.
The movement closes with a rush of all of those emotions that build up to an unsettled darkness. It leads into the Offertorium.
