Overture and Fugue
Overture and Fugue was written for the Central High School Orchestra in San Angelo, Texas in the Summer of 2019. The short Overture emulates the French Overture style with double dotted rhythms. The main material passes through all voices and gives a good opportunity to work on style, imitation and dynamics. The Overture ends on a Dominant chord, which prepares for the next section. The Fugue, starts with an 8 measures subject/theme introduced by cellos and basses. The first answer is played halfway on measure 5 by second violins and violas. After that, the theme appears in the first violins. This fugue features two small episodes. The first one, takes it to the dominant key and the second, brings the fugue back to its original key. Although second violins and violas never get the subject/theme, their parts have extremely important counterpoint. This work is a great introduction for baroque style and fugue for young orchestras.
