O Holy Night
Publisher Desc.
"O Holy Night" (also known as "Cantique de Noel") is
based on a 17th century French-language poem by poet Placide Cappeau. The
composer Adolphe Adam set this poem to music in 1847, creating the well-known
Christmas carol.
While most arrangements of this carol are in 6/8, this setting is in 4/4,
with only a hint of the common triple patterns found in the accompaniment
that so plague those bands striving for consistency. Simple and to the point,
this arrangement is appropriate for young bands as well as adult groups.
Opening with unison horns on the melody and clarinet accompaniment, it
finishes with the full ensemble in all its glory before ending as quietly as
it began. The delicate trumpet solo at the key change is a treat, changing
the character of the piece to something more intimate--almost a lullaby. Your
audience will love this!
