Playful The opening movement shows the versatility of both instruments. Each passage has simple harmonic language and each instrument plays off of the others passage like a team, as if sharing and forming a new idea. Frenzy Here the playfulness of the instruments becomes crazier. The short and crisp notes throughout this movement are the drive for the frenzy, as if in a sugar rush. Calm As a result of the previous movement, the intensity hits rock bottom with this Hindemith-esque round. The entire flute line is the original melodic content while the clarinet gets placed at random intervals every time it re-enters to create tension and release during this slow, lyrical section. Rampage The piece ends with this moment of absolute insanity. Being the fastest and most difficult of the four movements, the music stops for no one, containing so many technical passages and barely any room for a breath.
