Marimba Duet in D Dorian
Publisher Desc.
The Marimba Duet in D Dorian contains only those notes that are in the D Dorian scale, which is a D natural minor scale with a sharpened 6th degree (DEFGABC). The Dorian scale is one of the seven ecclesiastical or church modes (the others being Ionian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian). Many composers have used the Dorian scale in their compositions including Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) in the Royal March of the Lion portion of his Carnival of the Animals and Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) in several sections of his Sixth Symphony. More recent examples of compositions using the Dorian scale are Tito Puente's Oye Como Va, Stevie Wonder's I Wish, and the Beatles' And I Love Her. The Marimba Duet in D Dorian establishes D as the piece's tonal center early on with several accented downbeat Ds, sometimes preceded by an A natural, the scale's dominant scale degree. There are also accented B naturals (the raised 6th degree of the D natural minor scale) on the downbeats of measures 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and in many other places throughout the piece.
