Barnyard Blues
Publisher Desc.
Barnyard Blues can be performed by a first-year soloist or by the entire
trumpet section of a first-year band. The swing style rhythms will be
provided by the piano. The rhythms in the solo part are well within the
capabilities of first-year students. The solo part contains two written
accidentals: D-flat and A-flat. An optional middle C is also included. Finger snapping and the phrase "Oh
that crazy farm" will add a humorous effect to the performance, but they
are not essential. At M53 the solo part calls for the trumpet to use a
plunger. All of the notes in this section (concert F) require no valve work,
thus simplifying the new experience of
using a plunger. Of course, hand-over-bell is another option, but I have
found that young players are enthusiastic about this new method of making a
sound on the trumpet.
Thank you for choosing this composition. From my own experience, I can say
with certainty that your students and audience will love it.
Sincerely,
Joseph Compello
ADVANTAGES OF SECTION SOLOS IN YOUR CONCERT
1. Each section has an opportunity to be the main attraction. This is
especially important for bass instruments which rarely have the melody in
band arrangements.
2. Parents appreciate the opportunity to see their own children in a more
individualized setting.
3. In situations where the elementary band concert is given without the
vocal department, the concert can be extended to a suitable length without
taxing the endurance of young players. While one section is playing, the rest
of the band is resting.
4. Section solos are of inestimable value in concerts for recruitment
assemblies.
