At the Shrine
Publisher Desc.
Influenced by the Japanese hatsumode (New Years celebration), At the Shrine depicts the first visit of the new year to a Shinto shrine along with lively festivities in the streets. The piece begins with two claps to signify the summoning of Shinto spirits before prayer activities. Other cultural elements include the use of taiko drums, a firework-sounding section, and a bon odori dance. At the Shrine is appropriate for advanced high school and/or collegiate band programs seeking a more novelty piece for performance. It premiered in April 2015 during the Wingate University Wind Ensemble Concert.
