A Himalaya Concerto
Publisher Desc.
Performed in the UK and Australia, this amazing concerto has been
described by the clarinettist who premiered it as "A major new work -
stunning - beautiful clarinet writing and a major addition to the repertoire
(Idris Harries, 2016). I love it. The first movement is moody and full of
swirling mist, dark and dramatic, very cinematic. The second movement
captures the way that great mountains invite the spirit out to play and yet
sometimes terrify, very emotional. The third movement is pure joy, described
by another musician as "simply brilliant". Overall the work takes
the listener straight into the heart of the Himalayas.
The clarinet part is virtuosic and explores new territory in its glissando
writing, admirably performed by its dedicatee, Idris Harries. The cimbalom
(requiring a concert grand) is effectively a secondary solo instrument; the
part is relatively straightforward.
