Psalm 23

Hyman, Leon - Leon Hyman
Icon A cappella Publisher Desc.  Hyman's setting of Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my Shepherd") is a searching, deeply stirring, modern choral masterpiece, using varied combinations of soloists and vocal sections in music that ranges from searingly intense to lushly serene. Leon Hyman's SABBATH SETTINGS meld the sounds of the Jewish liturgical tradition with lush, post-Romantic harmonies to create uniquely expressive works for concert or worship. Suitable for advanced choirs. LEON HYMAN (1927-2022) had a distinguished career as a conductor and educator, leading the New York Philharmonic, the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, the American Symphony, the Jerusalem Symphony, the New Jersey Symphony, and others. He was co-founder and Music Director of the New Philharmonic of New Jersey, and served on the faculties of the Julliard School, Columbia University Teachers College, and Montclair State University (where he was Choral Director for 25 years). Equally at home on theater stages, he conducted the Joffrey Ballet on tours of the US and the Soviet Union, the Tokyo production of West Side Story, and on Broadway, the original productions of Dancin', 1776, The Apple Tree and Half a Sixpence. Leon served for over 66 years as choirmaster of Congregation Shearith Israel in New York City, the oldest congregation of Jews in North America, where he led a professional choir in performing a rich collection of music dating from ancient Babylonian times to the current day. Desiring to contribute to the repertoire of the congregation, Leon Hyman composed his Sabbath Settings to express his personal interpretation of Biblical texts sung in the Sabbath services.
