Preparatory Exercises, Op. 16
A classic collection of technical studies for the pianist, Schmitt's 212 finger exercises have retained their popularity as a basic tool for developing pianists because of their emphasis on finger independence and agility. Each short, two-measure exercise is based on repetitive patterns in a 5-finger position. The book includes additional exercises preparatory to the practice of scales and arpeggios, and an appendix containing scales, triads, arpeggios, and dominant seventh chords in all keys, as well as fingering for scales in double thirds and sixths, and the chromatic scale.
