Longing, Dreaming
A cappella
Publisher Desc.
"Longing, Dreaming" is the second movement of "Echoes from
the Heart," an a cappella, double-chorus work in three movements. In
this movement, as in the other two movements ("Ancient Roses" and
"I Remember"), the titles of all movements are incorporated into
the lyrics to heighten the sense of a recursive journey. "Longing,
Dreaming" explores what is the dream and who is the dreamer and suggests
a passionate melding of minds and hearts within a poignant dreamscape.
"Echoes from the Heart" was premiered in 1998 by the
Seattle-based ensemble The Esoterics, Eric Banks, Artistic Director, in their
Antiphonia concert, which was comprised of double-chorus works. This was the
first major work performed by the ensemble after I assumed the post of
Resident Composer for The Esoterics. It was reprised a year later, and a CD
was produced of that concert entitled "Antiphonia: Masterpieces for
double chorus."
The text for this movement and the others is taken from poems written by
Gordon E. Abshire whose writings I have used in other works. Gordon passed
away in 2005 and left me with many poems to explore in future works. What I
particularly enjoy about Gordon's writing is that many poems are like haiku
and as such can, in a few words, crystallize a feeling or a thought for all
time.
