Homage to Gabe
Third in the series FauréVoix, Homage to Gabe continues the use of a piano-accompanied wordless chorus, this time adding a trumpet in the solo spot. Unlike the former two settings, in which the arranger maintained the basic import of the music, he freely revises Fauré's work, virtually birthing a new piece. While the original melody and harmonic structure remain evident, the arrangement is couched in interludes that create a feeling of languorous jazz improvisation. Indeed, the piece is reminiscent of collaborations between guitarist Jim Hall and flugelhornist Art Farmer (and, to a lesser degree, pianist Bill Evans) during jazz excursions into the Ravel and Fauré Pavanes back in the '60s and '70's. The music remains a fairly easy grasp for choirs, as they become less "cause" and more "effect," accompanying the soloist - whose own notes are not devoid of challenges, however! Pianists will also enjoy another inventive workout.
