Bois Epais

One of Jean-Baptiste Lully's greatest hits, "Bois epais" (Dense shade) is sure to be a hit with your brass group. Originally a baritone aria from Lully's opera Amadis, "Bois epais" is a heartfelt lament by the main character Amadis, who is exiled and heartbroken. His only solace is the trees of the forest, to whom he is lamenting. Yet, even they are too happy for him, as Amadis is begging for the trees to blot out the sun. "Bois epais" is perfect for a brass group, as it is delicately arranged for the developing brass musician. This aria is straightforward, yet has enough flourishes to keep the player's interest. Each instrument has its own special part, which is easy to decipher with the rest of the ensemble. There are chromatisms, sudden and bombastic loud sections, more intimate and relaxed sections, and small ensemble moments in this composition. Furthermore, different instruments will receive the melody. Most importantly, this arrangement will work well with both larger and smaller ensembles.
