In Southern Philippine culture, legend tells of the lion/dragon Arimaonga living in the skies and playfully swallowing the moon. The tradition of the Maranao people was to force the creature to release the moon with loud noises, heard through the intense and rhythmic chanting, raw cries, and evocative calls from the choir. Persistent dissonance, vocal percussive elements, stomping, and clapping add to the choral cacophony. An impressive festival piece for advanced collegiate choirs!
