Angel of Light
Rooted in the distinctive "Era of Manifestations" period of Shaker history (1837-1847), this multimovement work is based entirely on Shaker texts and tunes and reflects the visionary repertoire written at that time. Throughout their history, angels have played a significant role as messengers of guidance, strength, encouragement, and inspiration.
With its origins in ecstatic singing, the repertoire from this period is truly unique. Songs, hymns, and anthems move effortlessly between English and the unknown tongues of angels and visiting spirits. This work creates a musical space to explore the many facets of this visionary repertoire, incorporating vocables and enigmatic, otherworldly languages. While initially these words may appear unintelligible, their beauty and meaning emerge in performance.
The movements can be sung individually or within the context of this seven-movement a cappella work. Movements: Sweet Angels Come Nearer; Woben Mesa Crelana; Lovely Angels; Vum Vive Vum; O Niske Vane; Beautiful Treasure and With My Blessing, I Have Blessed You. Some movements feature a soprano soloist.
