The profound opening words of Saint John's Gospel, used in The Word, reach back to the beginning of creation, and the music is therefore mystical and subdued  until the phrase "in him was life." From this point on, the feeling is one of bright optimism and confidence in the light of Christ. Perfect as an anthem at any time of the year but especially at Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve when this reading is proclaimed.
