The Thieving Magpie
The overture to Rossini's fun two-act opera is a favorite in the concert world. The opera sets a military tone about the mystery of a stolen spoon, actually taken by a bird. It is said that Rossini was locked in a room and he dropped pages of music for the copyists from the window. With wonderful malleted bass and high notes triplets, Martha Lynn's transcription is a great addition to the advanced ensemble's concert repertoire.
